Ramifications of Leaky Gut

Bacteria in Colon
Our ancestors lived on plant-based food (fruits, vegetables, nuts) and hunted meat. When fertilizers were introduced, they destroyed some of our food. We lost some fungi, some bacteria, and the nature’s chemicals in the soil. When we were on the farm with animals, we were exposed to some allergens, which helped us build some antibodies against serious diseases like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Now we have moved inside. Our contact with the outside world is less. We are down to the last ecology system, the relationship of bacteria in the colon with fruits and vegetables. This System is under threat by too many calories, too much fat, too much sugar, a little or no fruits and vegetables.
Bacteria in the colon are important. There is strength in numbers.
The more bacteria, the better.
Bacteria are produced and diversified. Fiber (non-digestible parts of fruits and vegetables, e.g. lignin, inulin, cellulose) is fermented by the gut bacteria because of the acid pH in the gut.
Fermentation of fiber makes bacteria multiply and diversity.
Fermentation also makes SCFA (sort chain fatty acids). These chemicals are surrogates for bacteria.
SCFA
- Fight unhealthy bacteria through food.
- Proliferate endothelial cells (in the gut wall) to keep the gut wall strong so that the gut contents (e.g. bacteria) do not Pierce through the blood veins and escape into the blood.
- Reduce blood glucose after a meal and increase AMPK in the liver and in the muscles. (That is what happens when we exercise. Or exercising muscles produce AMPK.)
GALT
Multiple diversified bacteria nudge, stimulate, and develop GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue). GALT produces antibodies that strengthen the gut wall; repel toxic chemicals, unhealthy bacteria, and inflammation; and is responsible for 80% of the body’s immunity.Serotonin antidepressant
90% of serotonin of the body comes from the gut. (Actually, the gut makes tryptophan, the precursor of serotonin that can get to the brain and is converted into serotonin.)GABA
GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) comes from the gut and reduces anxiety
Leaky Gut
If folks do not cat fruits and vegetables, there will be no fiber. The bacteria grow on fiber, there will be a few bacteria and fewer SCFA. With the help of diversified and multiple bacteria, the gut wall is strong and keeps bacteria inside the gut. With fewer bacteria, the gut wall is not strong and can be leaky (in terms of infection).Usually, the more the “bugs,” The worst that infections. Here the reverse is true. Fewer the “bug,” more serious the problem because the gut wall is weak and leaky. When the gut wall is leaky, fewer bacteria and other inflammatory chemicals could leak into the bloodstream and go to the distant organs.
Two noticeable factors that also could cause a leaky bowel are alcohol and fructose.
- Liver
The liver receives bacteria and other chemicals from the gut, but a healthy liver detoxify. With fructose, the liver is packed with fat and not up to a par in defending itself. With a leaky gut, bacteria can and will cause serious damage to the liver and lead to cirrhosis.
- Brain
Bacteria and other chemicals can reach the brain and cause dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Inflammatory chemicals causes ASD (autism spectrum disorder). It can also cause depression and anxiety.
- Bowel
With a leaky bowel, bacteria can damage the bowel itself and cause irritable bowel syndrome and some cases of Cohn’s disease.
- Fatigue
Bacteria leaking into the bloodstream can cause sick-like behavior and fatigue. Multiple diversified bacteria consume more calories and help the person maintain weight, even lose weight. Meat companies give antibiotics to animals to kill the bacteria in their gut to fatten them.
Treatment of a Leaky gut
Treatment would be special food, specific probiotics (containing specific bacteria) and other medicine like you Humira Crohn’s disease. But the treatment is not cheap. Humira is $4500 for a monthly shot. From a prevention point of view, Meat (hamburger, pizza, etc.) should be reduced. Plant-based food like beans, lentils, fresh fruits, and freshly cooked vegetables is the solution. Fiber should not be used in Gummies or in chocolates.
Before a youngster leaves the house and goes to college, he/she should get used to fresh fruits and tasty, cooked vegetables. Eat plain yogurt, a good probiotic.
Every person with any neuropsychiatric illness, e.g. depression, anxiety, bipolar, and ADHD, must reduce meat consumption and add more beans, lentils, fruits, and vegetables; every person must exercise.
